Autoscout24 has published a study entitled "Advantages of used cars: German premium brands at a low price".

Literally:

"Used car buyers also go for quality, but invest their money smartly, a representative survey by AutoScout24 shows. The German premium brands VW, Audi and BMW are best received. Used car buyers usually have an Audi A4, VW Golf or Audi A3 in mind. The main reason they don't want a new car: They can buy the same model for a lower purchase price and the depreciation is lower. Six percent are so convinced by used cars that they cannot even imagine ever buying a new car. This was stated by German motorists who plan to purchase a used vehicle within the next twelve months.

More than half (55 percent) cited the lower price, 44 percent the lower depreciation as an argument for choosing a used car instead of a new one. Almost one in three said they could not afford a new car (29 percent). Almost one in five (19 percent) see it as an advantage that they can also buy a used car from a private source, unlike a new car. Other reasons cited are: The lower price of a used car makes it possible to move up to a higher vehicle class (17 percent). 16 percent of potential buyers consider a used car purchase to be environmentally friendly because then no new car has to be manufactured."
